Trump extends sanctions for Russia-related cyberthreats for 1 year

WASHINGTON, Mar 31 (PRIME) -- U.S. President Donald Trump has prolonged for a year the 2015 decree that imposed sanctions for cyberthreats to the country, including the measures against Russia for supposed meddling in the local elections, according to a document seen by PRIME on Tuesday.

“These significant malicious cyber-enabled activities continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security, foreign policy, and economy of the U.S. For this reason, the national emergency declared on April 1, 2015, must continue in effect beyond April 1, 2020,” the decree read.

The original document signed by the then-President Barack Obama on April 1, 2015, with no word of Russia, was amended with another decree as of December 28, 2016, which mentioned Russia’s Federal Security Service and other entities in charge of, according to Washington, cyberattacks on the U.S.

Russia completely denied any involvement in cyberattacks or meddling in the U.S. elections and said the accusations were groundless.
